UHF Radio Buying Guide

May 16, 2022

What are UHF Radios?

A good UHF CB radio can prove an invaluable means of communication between drivers, workers and farmers across massive distances. By broadcasting on UHF or VHF wavelengths on citizen bands (CB for short), UHF radios provide a fixed area for communication that's closed off to normal radio stations, free of interference from emergency broadcast services and commercial radio stations.

Types of UHF Radios:

UHF Radios have greatly evolved over the last few years leading to great innovations in the level of technology available today, but we're here to simply it for you!

Fixed Mount Radios:

  • Most common form of radio generally mounted on the dash of the vehicle
  • When combined with an antenna these radios boast the highest level of power and reliability for CB communication

Hand Held Radios:

  • Hand-held UHF radios are pack a punched walkie-talkies, with less distanced than a fixed mount but extremely high performance for their size

Marine Radios:

  • Similar to standard UHF radios but designed to be more resistant to the sea
  • Many marine radios also operate on VHF wavelengths rather than UHF

Common UHF Radio Features:

Squelch Control:

  • Refers to the opening and closing of background noise that your radio detects on a particular wavelength.

CTSS, DCSS & Selcall:

  • Another method of controlling squelch which essentially adds tone to a squelch reducing noises made by radio interference

Signal Processing & Management:

  • The ability to convert analogue transmissions into a digital format for higher quality

Duplex:

  • Duplex means that your radio will broadcast on two separate channels within the same "channel" of communication, one for broadcasting and one for receiving. This makes both signals much clearer and less governed by interference, particularly when compared to those broadcasting on Simplex.

UHF Radio Supplements:

There is a vast range of accessories to improve the overall performance of your UHF radio allowing you to communicate much more effectively across all the different terrain Australia has to offer.

Antennas:

  • One of the single most paramount components for broadcasting and receiving transmissions, good antennas reduce interference and increase the projection of your broadcasting
  • Ensure the antenna you are purchasing is suited to the terrain you'll most likely be broadcasting in

Power Supply Equipment:

  • Ensures both your vehicle's electrics and communication equipment are protected against surges and dips in power

Microphone & Speakers:

  • Whilst most UHF radios are already equipped with microphones & speakers the original parts can be upgraded to enhance communication.
  • You can also purchase customised controllers giving you a greater level of control over the volume of your channel as well as improved speakers to filter out background noise.
