Snorkels provide cleaner, dryer and cooler air to the vehicles engine. By raising the height of the vehicles air intake, this also allows for safer water crossings. The ram head forces air into the airbox and deflects any rain, forcing the rain to the outer edges, allowing the rain to exit at the head level and not enter the airbox.
